The Covington Lady Buccs had their hands full with a talented Miami East team, falling in three straight games.
SEPTEMBER 30, 2010 - CASSTOWN
Miami East is a young volleyball team, but one that has a roster full of talented players.
Which spelled trouble for the Lady Buccs of Covington, who gave as good as it got early on only to fall in three straight games 25-19, 25-16 and 25-13.
"We competed," said Covington coach Lindsey Sullenberger. "Overall, we didn't play too bad, but it seemed like we were just a step behind all night."
Miami East built an early 9-4 lead in the first game, but Covington eventually cut the margin to 19-18 to force a Viking timeout.
The Vikings then ran off four straight points to take back the momentum and eventually cruised to the 25-19 win.
"We hustled and made some great, scrappy plays," Sullenberger said. "We played with a lot of effort, but our problem was we'd give up too many four or five-point runs."
Covington once again hung close to Miami East in the second game, but a late rally by the Vikings led to a 25-16 win. This seemed to shake Covington's confidence as it gave Miami East its best shot only to fall short.
"Our confidence is lacking right now," said Sullenberger. "We played really good at times and then we'd lose confidence when we'd make a mistake."
And it took Covington a while to get its confidence back in the third game as Miami East built a 19-3 lead. The Lady Buccs managed to score ten more points in the match, but Miami East closed the show with a 25-13 win.
"The girls didn't quit," Sullenberger emphasized. "When we were down 19-3 in the third game it would have been easy for them to stop playing and they didn't do that. There's a lot we can built on from tonight."
The loss drops Covington to 7-9 on the season and 5-4 in CCC action.
The Lady Buccs travel to Jackson Center on Saturday.
