The Covington Lady Buccs volleyball team looks to defend its conference championship with six returning letter winners.

The big question for the Covington Lady Buccs heading into the 2009 season - is this a transition year for the Lady Buccs?

Especially after the Lady Buccs unseeded perennial conference power Twin valley South from the conference championship and reached the district final before falling to Jackson Center. Covington finished the season with an 11-1 record in the CCC and an 18-8 record overall.

Gone from Covington's roster are Krissi Tobias, Meagan Grant, Kelsey Tobias, Katie Dickey and Holly Tobias, who won player of the year honors in the Cross County Conference and is now playing at the collegiate level at Edison State Community College.

Anytime you lose the caliber of players Covington lost to graduation, it makes for some uncertainty.

But Covington does have plenty of talent from a year ago as six letter winners return; seniors Alyssa Angle, Shelby Hoblit and Rachel Rindler, along with juniors Josselyn Tobias and Emily Henry and sophomore Caitlin Crawford.

Angle earned first-team in the CCC, while Rindler was honorable mention as a libro a year ago, making the transition that much easier for Covington as it hopes to defend its Cross County Conference title.

Joining the group at the varsity level are sophomores Hannah Pond, Shelby Kihm, Hailey Reames and Sammy Snyder, as well as freshman Shelby Waag.

Plus, Jim Smith returns for his third season at the helm at Covington with a 29-22 career record.

Splitting time at the varsity and junior varsity level are sophomores Shelby Kihm and Hannah Pond. Rounding out the junior varsity roster are Sami Snyder, Brittanie Flora, Zoe, Bethany Richards, Jenna Rindler and Brooke Selanders.

Covington will also field a freshman team consisting of Kiersten Atkinson, Rachel Carder, Maddy Clark, Olivia Moody, Caitlin Copeland, Lindsey Frantz, Anna Snyder and Heidi Snipes. Junior varsity players Brooke Selanders and Bethany Richards will also see freshman action.
