Christian Commits to Oakland...

Lauren Christian, a standout thrower for the Covington track team, recently committed to continue her athletic career and education at Oakland University in Michigan.
Lauren Christian signs her letter of intent with her mother and grandfather at her side.

Lauren Christian has always had high aspirations for herself as a thrower at Covington High School and after completing her senior season in the spring of 2019, Christian will take her talents to the state of Michigan after being rewarded with an athletic scholarship at Oakland University.

"I'm so excited," Lauren said after signing her letter of intent on Wednesday at Covington High School with many family and friends on hand to share in her big day. "I really liked the atmosphere of the campus and the chemistry of the team. They made me feel at home when I made my visit."

For Lauren's mother, Jennifer Christian, it was a proud moment to witness her daughter make a commitment for the next phase of her education.

"It's nice to see her spread her wings," she said. "I know it's going to be sad when she goes (to college), but I'm sure every parent goes through that feeling. I'm just so proud of her because she is going after her dreams."

Which is having the same type of success at the collegiate level as what she's been able to achieve in high school.

"I'd like to break the school records and make it to the NCAA Championships," Lauren explained without hesitation. "Those are my goals."

With her senior season of high school still ahead of her, Christian has already established herself as the top female thrower in Covington history as she owns the school record in the shot put (44’ 1.50”) and the discus (123’7”).

She is also a three-time state placer as she took third at state in the shot put and seventh in the discus this past spring and finished sixth at state in the shot put as a sophomore in 2017.

And Christian credits those who have supported her to this point in her journey.

"There has been a lot of people in Covington who have been very supportive and who have encouraged me along the way," she said. "My coaches have really helped a lot in my mindset and has given me motivation to keep getting better."

Another individual who has helped Christian in her journey lives outside of the Covington community, Theo Whitaker.

"Theo has helped Lauren out a lot as well," said Jennifer. "He has worked with her outside of the season and at indoor meets."

It has all led to a great high school career with another season yet to come and an opportunity to compete at the Division I collegiate level.

And fortunately for Lauren's family and friends, they will be able to watch her compete.

"Oakland is close to Detroit (Michigan) so it's not real far," said Jennifer. "She (Lauren) was considering a school in New Orleans, and that would be way too far."

Oakland is part of the Horizon League, so even if family and friends can't make the trek to Michigan, Christian will compete against schools closer to home.

"We will see Wright State and Youngstown," said Lauren, who will major in Occupational Therapy at Oakland. "That will be kinda cool to see Jett (Murphy) and Anna (Dunn) - two Covington grads - at the collegiate level."

Until then, Christian is excited about her senior season of high school.

"Basketball and then track," she said with a big smile. "The next few months are going to be fun."
