TROY - Covington's regional qualifiers had a strong first day at the Division III Regional Championships in Troy on Wednesday as the Buccaneer competitors advanced to Friday's finals in all but one event.
Senior standout Ben Miller had the fastest time in the 110 hurdles, 14.93; third fastest time in the 300 hurdles, 40.02; and teamed with Ethan Herron, Shane Straw and Brandon Magee for the third fastest time in the 4x100 meter relay, 44.87 in the prelims.
Covington's 4x200 meter relay team of Shea Robinson, Heidi Cron, Tori Lyle and Breanna Kimmel advanced to Friday's finals with the fourth fastest time of 1:49.73, despite struggling on two of their handoffs. The same four girls also advanced in the 4x400 meter relay, with the eighth fastest time of 4:16.29.
The only event in which Covington failed to qualify for the finals came in the boys 4x800 meter relay. Seniors Alex Schilling and Nathan Dunn had Covington in first place at the halfway mark of the 3,200 relay. The Buccs nearly made it to state as those two teamed with Jared Ford and Nathan Lyle for sixth-place in 8:19.40.
Friday, the remaining Buccaneer athletes must place in the top four in their respective events to qualify for the state meet.
Junior Carly Shell and Alex Schilling take to the track in the 1600 meter run, while Nathan Dunn competes in the 3200 meter run. Ben Miller attempts to qualify for state in two individual events - the 110 and 300 meter hurdles - and in the 4x100 meter relay with Herron, Straw and Magee.
Cron, Robinson, Kimmel and Lyle attempt to qualify for state in both the 4x200 and 4x400 relays.
Running events continue on Friday at 5:00pm at Troy's Memorial Stadium.
