The Covington Lady Buccs had a big weekend with fourth games in three days, capped by a win over New Bremen on Friday and splitting two contests in the Cancer Classic at Newton High School on Saturday.

COVINGTON - With the weather finally becoming ideal for playing softball, the Covington Lady Buccs capped busy week of four games in three days with a double-header in the Cancer Classic at Newton High School on Saturday.

The stretch began on Thursday with a victory over Bethel and then Friday Covington hosted New Bremen in a non-conference game where it came from behind to beat the Cardinals 6-4. New Bremen had built a 3-0 lead before the Lady Buccs scored 4 runs in the fifth and 2 in the sixth for the win.

Meg Rogers picked up the win in the circle with 9 strikeouts and led the Lady Buccs with 3 hits. Karyanne Turner drove in 2 runs on 2 hits.

On Saturday in the Cancer Classic, Covington had mixed results as it defeated Xenia 10-0 in five innings and fell to Graham 21-7.

Against Xenia, Covington scored 2 in the first, 7 in the second and 1 in the third - all on 10 hits coming off of the bats Erika Gostomsky, (2), Reaghan Lemp (2), Mara Newhouse (2), Meg Rogers (2), and Karyanne Turner (2). Meg Rogers went the distance, allowing just 3 hits and striking out 4.

The game against Graham wasn’t what Covington hoped as the Falcons broke open a 3-2 game with 11 runs in the fifth and 6 more in the seventh for a run rule victory. Graham tallied 17 hits, while Covington had 7 hits and a very uncharacteristic 7 errors in the field.

Karyanne Turner led the Lady Buccs at the late with 2 hits, 2 RBI and a run scored.

Covington’s record stands at 12-3 overall and 7-0 in the Three Rivers Conference.
