LADY BUCCS WORK TO STAY SHARPL...
Needing to stay sharp for the tournament, the Covington Lady Buccs challenged themselves against perennial power Greenville and showed they can compete at a very high level despite falling 8-5.

COVINGTON - When you are accustom to playing several times in week and then only play once in eight days, it’s a smart strategy to look for ways to stay sharp - especially at tournament time.

That’s why Covington coach Dan Cain scheduled a non-conference contest with perennial power Greenville on Friday and another contest tomorrow (Saturday) against Versailles.

And despite dropping the game to Greenville 8-5, it was a win for the Lady Buccs because they found out they can compete with anybody when they play to their capabilities.

Through five innings Covington played extremely well. The Lady Buccs scored three runs in the first and held a 4-3 advantage into the sixth inning. In the process, Covington got out of a bases loaded jam with no outs in the fifth - allowing just one run in the inning.

Also, the 2 runs scored by Greenville in the third came on one big hit with two outs - a two-run home run.

Other than that, the Lady Buccs played extremely impressive in the field and connected on some timely hits that led to three runs in the first and another run in the bottom of the fifth.

Greenville was able to score two runs in the sixth and three runs in the seventh - all coming with two outs - situations Covington has struggled with as of late.

Still, Friday was a very positive evening for the Lady Buccs as it provided the opportunity to sharpen their skills for Tuesday’s sectional final against Fort Loramie.

Overall, Meg Rogers tossed four great innings for Covington until being relieved by Nigella Reck in the fifth.

Offensively, Covington connected on seven hits with Reck connecting on triple and Karyanne Turner recording a double and scoring two runs. Meg Rogers had two hits, while freshman Maggie Anderson drove in two runs.

The loss drops Covington’s record to 16-6 on the season, but gives the Lady Buccs more experience for the remainder of the state tournament.

Karyanne Turner (Left) and Nigalle Reck (Middle) are congratulated by Erika Gostomsky (Right) after scoring two runs.
Maggie Anderson makes a throw from third to second for an out.
