|MAY 3, 2013 - COVINGTON
The unbeaten Covington Lady Buccs made quick work of Twin Valley South on Friday with an impressive 10-0 run-rule victory in five innings to improve to 19-0 on the season.
And in the process, Covington was able to give its ace pitcher some rest due to a stellar effort by junior Morgan Arbogast, who hurled a one-hitter.
"We're getting Casey (Yingst) some rest," said Covington coach Dean Denlinger. "I know Casey is a competitor and doesn't want to sit out, but we need her to stay strong and healthy."
Which make someone like Arbogast so valuable to the Lady Buccs pitching staff.
"Absolutely," agreed Denlinger. "Arby (Arbogast) is a team player and she'll do anything that's asked of her. It's nice we can go to her at any time and feel confident that she's as good as anybody. Heck, she's 6-0 on the season."
What's also nice is the fact that Covington fields arguably the best defense in Denlinger's tenure as head coach. In 19 games his team has only committed 14 errors.
"That's the difference between the good teams and great teams," said Denlinger in regards to defense. "We feel we have to have a great defense to get to where we want to go. You won't get far in the tournament without a defense."
And the play of third baseman Heidi Snipes stands out. If there is a better third baseman in the state, Denlinger hasn't seen her.
"I agree," said Denlinger in regards to Snipes. "She's had a great senior year and you know, she can hit pretty good too."
Along with Snipes, Covington played error-free ball once again, while tallying 10 hits at the plate.
Haley Adams and Connor Schaffer was had two hits, while Brittany Flora doubled and Morgan McReynolds, Cassidy Cain, Arbogast, Jessie Shilt, Heidi Snipes and Jessica Dammeyer each recorded hits as well.
It all led to another impressive win in a perfect season to this point.
But Delinger knows his team hasn't arrived by any means. That's because Covington has a lot of softball left to be played before accomplishing its ultimate goal.
"We're playing well, but we need to take it one game at a time," he said. "You can be beat on any given night by any team if you don't bring your 'A Game'. There are so many variables in this game that we have to be playing our best every day."
The next day is a showdown with a very dangerous Celina team in a double-header tomorrow.
"We'll find out how good we are, that's for sure," Denlinger said. "From what I know, they hit the ball really well and are a well-rounded team. We better be ready to play our best softball."
Which is what the Lady Buccs have done more often that not throughout the season.
