|TUESDAY, APRIL 2, 2013 - COVINGTON
Covington coach Dean Denlinger couldn't have drawn up a better outcome than what his softball team produced in a 12-0 run rule victory over Anna on Tuesday as 15 of the 18 kids on his roster recorded at least one hit in the contest.
"It was great to get all eighteen girls into the game and have everyone contribute like they did," said Denlinger. "In the last inning we had five of our eight bench players get hits."
Which shows the depth Covington has on its roster and the passion the kids have for the game.
"I love the energy and the aggressiveness of our younger kids," Denlinger continued. "We had a reserve game last night against Sidney and those girls were so excited. The enthusiasm is contagious."
That enthusiasm was on display from start to finish as Covington scored in every inning, including a five-run fourth inning and a three-run sixth inning.
Still, the game went longer than what the rules dictate as the umpires evidently didn't realize Covington had a 9-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth, which was likely due to the fact that the scoreboard wasn't functioning properly.
"It worked to our advantage because we were able to get everyone in," said Denlinger.
What was functioning properly was the Lady Bucc Defense as it played error-free ball for the second time in three outings.
"The girls played solid defense again," Denlinger praised. "Haley (Adams) made a really nice play in left field to get the double play. You don't see many kids get thrown out at first on a relay from left field."
Casey Yingst was also stellar once again on the mound as she went the distance in recording the two-hitter. Yingst struck out 11 and surrendered just one walk on the afternoon.
And Covington's bats were on fire with 19 total hits in the contest with Jessie Shilt, Heidi Snipes, Casey Yingst and Haley Adams all going 2-3. Snipes, Adams and Morgan Arbogast each doubled in the game.
The victory pushed Covington's record to 3-0 on the young season as it travels to face Coldwater on Thursday.
