LADY BUCCS GUT OUT A WIN OVER TRAIL...
It wasn't easy, but the Covington Lady Buccs received just enough offense to make a solid pitching and defensive effort hold up in a 2-0 win.

APRIL 14, 2011 - NEW PARIS
The Covington softball team scratched and clawed its was to a 2-0 victory over a gritty National Trail team on Thursday to improve to 10-0 on the season and 4-0 in the CCC.

And coming off an emotional win just 24 hours earlier against Miami East, Lady Buccs' coach Dean Denlinger will take a win any way he can get it.

"Our league is tough and there are no gimmes," Denlinger said. "We've played a lot of softball the last week and I thought our bats looked a little tired. They (National Trail) made plays too, so I've got to give them credit. They played a nice game."

Playing the sixth game in eight days, Covington managed to hit the ball hard throughout the contest, but couldn't find the gaps on a consistent basis.

In all, the Lady Buccs managed just five hits in the contest, just two going for extra bases - one a triple by Shainia Grilliot followed by a double by Brittanie Flora.

Also recording hits for Covington were Casey Yingst, Connor Schaffer and Heidi Snipes.

"They were playing us deep in the outfield and we had a couple that would have been out at our field," said Denlinger.

Covington scored a run in the first inning on an RBI single by Connor Schaffer and then scored an insurance run in the fifth on a sacrifice RBI by Aubrye Cain.

Which was all the offense Covington needed as the pitching duo of Chloe Shell and Aubrye Cain and the Lady Buccs "D" made it stand for the shutout win.

Shell struck out seven of the 19 batters she faced in five innings of work to record the win, while Cain picked up the save by hurling the final two innings in the contest.

"We played error-free ball again tonight," Denlinger explained. "Our defense has been carrying us."

Covington needs another stellar defensive effort tomorrow night as the Lady Buccs travel to Tri-County North with limited rest.

"That's a tough place to play," Denlinger said of playing at Tri-County North. "We better be ready to play."

Because there are no gimmes in the CCC.
