|LADY BUCCS GET BIG WIN OVER GRAHAM...
Covington defeated a very athletic and talented Graham team on their home field, 8-1.
MARCH 31, 2011 - ST. PARIS
A familiar face was in the opposing dugout Thursday evening as the Covington Lady Buccs traveled to St. Paris to take on Graham and former Lady Buccs' coach Lynnette Roeth.
And Covington knew it had to be on top of its game to come out with a win.
"The girls really wanted to win this on their field," said Covington coach Dean Denlinger. "We talked about it on the way over there."
Fully focused, the Lady Buccs broke open a scoreless game with a six-run third inning and cruised to an 8-1 win.
"We hit the ball well and it was against one of the better pitchers we'll see all year," Denlinger said. "That girl brought the heat. But we did a lot of good things - slapping, dragging, bunting, hitting into the gaps - you name it, we did it."
The big third inning started with a walk and a stolen base by Brittanie Flora and then followed with a sacrifice bunt by Shainna Grilliot.
"Shainna played a great game," Denlinger praised. "Here's a girl who hasn't played softball since the fifth grade and she's playing very well for us."
Jessie Shilt connected on an RBI single and then Covington loaded the bases with two straight walks to set up Hannah Pond's two-run single. Pond, who has been battling a nagging injury, came up clutch in the second straight contest.
"Hannah is gutting it out," said Denlinger. "We were down to ten kids tonight, so we really needed her and she came through."
Covington closed out the inning with a two-run double by Chloe Shell, who also was dominant on the mound.
Shell went the distance for the second straight time and struck out eight of the 28 batters she faced.
"We played well defensively," Denlinger stated. "They got the one unearned run in the fifth, but other than that we played really well."
Covington scored its two other runs in the fourth and the top of the seventh to seal the deal.
"This is a big win against a very athletic team," Denlinger said. "Graham has a lot of good athletes over there and their pitching is really good. We beat a really nice team tonight."
Jessie Shilt went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Aubrye Cain also connected on a pair of base hits.
Shell and Pond each drove in two runs, while Heidi Snipes and Brittanie Flora connected on base hits to score runs.
The win boosts Covington's record to 2-0 as it travels to Lehman on Saturday for a double header.
