The Covington Lady Buccs improved to 6-0 on the season and 2-0 in the CCC with a hard-fought 5-0 win over Bethel on Thursday.
"That's a tough place to play," said Covington coach Dean Denlinger in regards to playing at Bethel High School. "For some reason we seem to struggle at times over there."
Covington didn't seem to struggle early as it took a 5-0 lead through the first three innings, three of those coming in the second inning.
But the Lady Buccs couldn't take advantage of additional scoring opportunities throughout the remainder of the games as they left seven runners stranded.
"It's disappointing to leave seven runners stranded in a game," said Denlinger. "I thought we were going to bust it open in the fifth, but we had two runners picked off."
Fortunately for Covington, Chloe Shell was on her game on the mound and the defense was solid behind her. Shell went the distance and struck out 15 of the 24 batters she faced. Plus, she didn't surrender a single walk and allowed just four hits.
"Chloe had very good control of her pitches tonight," Denlinger said. "They've got some nice hitters, especially in the top half of their lineup. But Chloe did a nice job of hitting her locations and keeping them guessing all night."
Bethel's Kelly Altrip was also stellar on the mound. She held a potent Covington team to even hits and struck out four batters.
"Coming into tonight we've only struck out five times all year," Denlinger explained. "That's a very nice pitcher they have. She's tough."
Jessie Shilt was the lone Covington hitter to record two base hits as she went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI.
Five other players managed to connect for hits with Shell connecting for a two-run double in the third.
With its unbeaten record still in tact, Covington has its toughest weekend ahead with a trip to Tipp City tomorrow night followed by match-ups against Division I schools on Saturday in the Tipp Tournament.
"The tougher the competition, the better," said Denlinger. "This weekend we'll see some of the best competition around. We'll find out wahat we are made of, that's for sure."
