END OF ONE ERA - THE BEGINNING OF ANOTHER...

Ashley Diltz and Curtis Dysinger concluded outstanding careers, while the boys team may be in the beginning of something great.

One of the most successful careers in girls cross country came to and end Saturday at the Regional Meet.

On a cold, wet, and windy day, Ashley Diltz was looking to overcome the elements and a fast field in hopes of finishing in the top 16 to qualify for state. To do so, Diltz needed to run a personal best and under 20:00 to do so.

That never materialized as the senior struggled with tightness throughout the race and finished 64th in the time of 21:24.27. The time was over 1:00 off of her time at District in which Diltz ran a 20:19.

Still, Diltz concludes her career as one of the top female runners in school history. Her personal best of 20:19 at District ranks her among the top eight fastest times by a Covington runner.

For the boy's team, it's a beginning of a new era as the young Buccaneers finished 9th as a team. Although the team or any of the individuals failed to qualify for the state meet, the team defeated many of the teams they had finished behind earlier in the season.

With the loss of just one senior, Curtis Dysinger, the Buccaneers appear to be a team capable of bigger and better things in years to come.

Sophomore Levi VanDeGrift ran an amazing race under the conditions. In spite of the weather, VanDeGrift put together a personal-best performance with a time of 17:32.82 for 32nd place.

Curtis Dysinger ran his final race in style, finishing in 18:01.93 for 58th, while freshman Willy Hoffert finished next to Dysinger at 59th with a time of 18:03.38.

Also performing well was Andy Hittle (95th), Brandon Flora (99th), C.J. Poling (103rd) and Zach Shilt (117).

With everyone by Dysinger returning next year, the Buccaneer cross country team has the potential to become one of the top teams in school history in 2008.

Congratulations to Ashley Diltz and Curtis Dysinger for outstanding careers at Covington High School.
