DECEMBER 12, 2020 - COVINGTON
Every team wants to win, but sometimes the scoreboard doesn't reflect the measure of a team.
What reflects the measure of a team is how you play the game - how much "Dawg" you have in you.
So even in a 52-43 loss to Arcanum, a young Lady Buccs' basketball team showed plenty of promise because the girls were relentless, gave maximum effort and faught to the very end.
Covington also showed significant improvement since a season opening, thirty-point loss to Versailles as the Lady Buccs took Arcanum to the wire - the same Arcanum team who defeated Versailles just days earlier.
The Lady Buccs had every opportunity to take command of the game, but missed shots inside the paint and the inability to limit Arcanum from getting to the free throw line was Covington's downfall. In all, Arcanum made 21-of-33 free throws to just six-of-13 for Covington.
The score was knotted at 11-11 after one and 13-13 early in the second quarter. But the lid on the rim closed for Covington and Arcanum went on a 10-0 run to open up a 33-22 lead at the break.
Covington made defensive adjustments in the second half and eventually cut the deficit to one point early in the fourth quarter before Arcanum regrouped to push the lead back to six with just under three-minutes left.
But a three-point play by Claudia Harrington appeared to give Covington a lift at the 2:00 mark as the Lady Buccs closed the margin to three points, 46-43.
Unfortunately Covington couldn't get the defensive stop it needed on the ensuing possession as Hailey Unger connected on Arcanum's lone three-pointer of the game to push the lead back to six.
Covington wasn't able to score the rest of the way and Arcanum knocked down three more free throws down the stretch to hand Covington its second loss of the season.
The Lady Buccs fall to 3-2 (3-1 CCC) and travels to Bradford on Thursday in another big league match-up.
Carlie Besecker led Covington in scoring with 16 points, while Claire Fraley dropped in 10 points and Gracie Anderson contributed with 9.
Unger led Arcanum with a game-high 19 points and Madelyn Fearon scored 13.
Still, it was an effort Covington can build on as it proved this young team is on the rise.
Because there are some "Dawgs" in Covington uniforms.
