THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2019 - PITSBURG
The Covington Lady Buccs played right with Franklin Monroe for a quarter, but the host Jets had too many offensive weapons to contain in a 66-23 defeat.
And the most potent weapon for Franklin Monroe was 6-foot senior Corina Conley, who had already surpassed the 1,000-career-point milestone a year ago. Like most teams, the Lady Buccs just didn’t have anyone who could match up with Conley and the Lady Jet star took advantage by scoring 15 of her game-high 19 points in the first half.
Still, Covington was able to use grit and hustle to stay with Franklin Monroe throughout the first quarter and trailed 16-11 at the end of the opening frame.
But the Lady Buccs went ice cold from the floor as the Franklin Monroe defensive pressure intensified and the result was just 12 more points the rest of the game.
Led by Conley, Franklin Monroe outscored Covington 21-4 in the second to push its advantage to 37-15 at the break.
With Covington adjusting its defense in hopes of containing Conley in the second half, the unselfishness of the senior standout was on display as she used the opportunity to set her teammates up for open looks at the basket.
And her supporting cast came through by scoring all but four of Franklin Monroe’s 25 second half points.
Offensively for Covington, frustration set in as shots continued to bounce off the rim one by one. It was one of those nights where shots just wouldn’t fall.
The loss drops the Lady Buccs to 2-5 (2-2 CCC). Covington will host Newton next Friday in the Buccaneer Holiday Classic Tournament at 6pm.
