JANUARY 20, 2020 - ARCANUM
It has been a season of misfortune for the Covington girls basketball team in regards to injuries and with two critical pieces out against a very good Arcanum team it was an uphill battle from the opening tip.
Covington entered the game with just eight girls dressed in varsity uniforms - three of those being girls who play primarily at the junior varsity level. Then, during the game one of those players went down, sophomore Bree Reynolds.
Still, the girls in black and white uniforms never surrendered. Not even when Arcanum had a 13-0 run after Covington built an 11-7 lead midway through the first quarter. And not when Arcanum pushed its advantage to 18 points early in the fourth quarter after Reynolds was on the bench nursing yet another injury to a Covington player.
It all meant Morgan Kimmel, Claire Fraley and Claudia Harrington were on the floor for every single second of the game, while Josie Crowell, Ellie Hedges and Reynolds rotated in and out of the lineup until Reynolds went down with an injury. That meant inserting freshman Meg Rogers, who gave a great account of herself in a tough situation.
As previously mentioned, Covington surged to an 11-7 lead midway through the opening frame thanks to a trey and a jumper by Ellie Hedges, a runner by Morgan Kimmel and a traditional tree-point play by Claire Fraley.
But suddenly the shooting went cold for Covington while Arcanum heated up. The Trojans went on a 13-0 run before Claudia Harrington connected on a layup in the waining seconds of the opening frame.
Arcanum pushed its advantage to 35-21 at the break and maintained the margin after three quarters, 51-38.
A pair of quick treys and a free throw moved Arcanum’s lead to 18 points, but Covington just wouldn’t relent.
Morgan Kimmel got things started with a layup and covered the free throw. Ellie Hedges hit a trey and suddenly the margin was within reach with 3:00 to go, 58-46.
Unfortunately time wasn’t on Covington’s side and Arcanum was able to maintain an 11-point win.
Covington had three players score in double figures with Kimmel leading the way with 15 points. Claire Fraley had 11 and Claudia Harrington chipped in 10 points. Ellie Hedges and Josie Crowell rounded out the scoring for Covington as Hedges had eight points and Crowell dropped in seven points.
Although they didn’t find themselves reaching the scoring column, Bree Reynolds and Meg Rogers contributed greatly at both ends of the floor with their relentless effort.
The loss drops Covington’s record to 7-10 on the season and 5-5 in the CCC, but the record isn’t any indication of how hard these girls play.
And at the end of the day, what more can one ask?
Covington: 13, 8, 17, 13 = 51
