DECEMBER 18, 2020 - COVINGTON
The Covington Buccaneers played host to neighboring rival Bradford on Friday and the Railroaders entered the contest with limited practices with the entire team together due to COVID-19 quarantines.
Yet, Bradford (0-2) gave the Buccaneers all they could handle, and then some, but Covington was able to overcome a double-digit deficit to pull out a one-point win, 58-57.
And the spark plug for Bradford was sophomore Parker Davidson, who scored 20 of his game-high 31 points in the first half to ignite a 33-24 Railroader lead at the break.
Davidson was magical all night, scoring 16 points in the opening frame on two treys, three layups and four free throws. The sophomore standout willed the Railroaders to a 22-9 lead after one, but Covington outscored Bradford 15-11 in the second quarter to cut the deficit to nine.
The margin would have been more, but Covington was able to knock down some critical shots in the final two minutes to keep the score manageable at the break. Junior Owen Boehringer came up big in the frame for Covington as he tallied seven of his 14 points by taking the ball aggressive to the basket resulting into buckets or foul shots.
Covington then took over in the third quarter as Jake Hamilton scored 10 of the Buccs’ 14 points in the frame to cut the deficit to 42-38 at the end of the third.
Hamilton continued with his hot shooting stroke in the fourth with seven points, while Wes Gooding knocked down a pair of treys to spark a 20-point scoring effort for the Buccs in the final twelve minutes.
Bradford tried gallantly to maintain its lead, but came one point short of pulling off the victory.
Covington was led in scoring by Jake Hamilton, who scored 25 points, while Owen Boehringer dropped in 14 points.
The wins boosts Covington’s record to 2-4 on the season and 2-1 in the CCC as the Buccs travel to Franklin Monroe tomorrow night.
