APRIL 13, 2021 - ANSONIA
Coming off of an emotional game against Minster just 24 hours earlier, the Covington Buccaneers found themselves in another tight battle against Ansonia on Tuesday.
And thanks to great pitching by senior Jake Hamilton and a flawless defense performance, the Buccaneers were able to escape with a 1-0 win to improve to 6-3 on the season and 4-0 in the CCC.
Hamilton, who tossed a perfect game against Tri-Village in his last outing last Thursday, was masterful once again on the hill for Covington. The senior went all seven innings and allowed just four hits. He struck out 15 and surrendered just two walks.
The six base runners were all Ansonia could muster against Hamilton and the Buccaneer defense as Covington didn’t commit a single error in the field.
However, Ansonia was able to threaten in the bottom of the seven as it had the tying run on third with not outs.
But Hamilton took maters into his own hands by striking out the next three batters to end the game.
Offensively, Covington continued to hit the ball well, but just couldn’t put runs across the plate.
In all, the Buccaneers only failed to put the ball in play five times in the contest, but managed just the one run in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by David Robinson to score Avery Rench.
Covington pounded out eight hits in the contest with Rench going 2-for-3 and Jensen Wagoner going 2-for-4. Kody Nelson, Jake Dilley, Job Morgan and Robinson also recorded hits for Covington.
After three straight and and seven of the last eight on the road, Covington finally returns home on Thursday to host Bethel.
