OCTOBER 22, COVINGTON
Covington's volleyball season came to a end on Wednesday in the first round of the sectional tournament as #10 Southeastern stunned the Lady Buccs in for sets 25-14, 25-21, 24-26, 22-25.
It also ends the careers of five seniors; Alyssa Kimmel, Ellery reck, Hillary Hoying, Destina Wills and Bethany Weldy.
"This is a disappointing loss mainly because of the hard work put forth by our seniors and their teammates," commented Covington coach Lonnie Cain.
Covington came out on fire in the opening set, using pin-point serves to keep Southeastern off balance and hitting the ball with aggression to conclude offensive sets. The result was a dominant 25-14 win in set one.
Southeastern caught fire in the second set, building an early 10-3 lead and carrying the margin late into the set - leading 24-16. With little room for error, Covington was able to make a comeback with five straight points to force a Southeastern timeout.
Unfortunately for the Lady Buccs, the Trojans were able to gain the set-sealing point out of the timeout to even up the match with a 25-21 win.
The pivotal third set went back-and-forth until Southeastern was able to squeak out a 26-24 win.
The Trojans then closed out the contest and end Covington's season with a narrow 25-22 win in the fourth set.
"After a fairly easy win in the first set, we became a little complacent and struggled from behind the remaining three sets," Cain said.
As disappointing as it is to see Covington's season end with a 14-9 record, it is a blessing the Lady Buccs were able to play 23 matches in what has been a very odd year due to Covid.
