AUGUST 27, 2020 - PLEASANT HILL
It wasn’t easy, but the Covington Lady Buccs were able to make enough plays at critical times to sweep rival Newton in three very hotly contested sets, 26-24, 25-18, 25-21.
"We were fortunate to pull this one out in straight sets,” said Covington coach Lonnie Cain. "Newton played well and we played with weak focus."
After an emotional “Senior Night” in a victory over Brookville on Tuesday, the Lady Buccs suffered through mental lapses at times tonight.
"I think we were just going through the motions and letting a single mistake turn into three mistakes,” Cain explained. “We need to improve on our mental game."
After squeaking by in the opening set 26-24, Covington appeared to take control of the match with a 25-18 win in the second set.
But Newton would not go away quietly as it gave Covington all it could handle in set three. Fortunately the Lady Buccs were able to close out the evening with a 25-21 win to move to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the CCC.
Statistical leaders for the Lady Buccs:

Covington's junior varsity team also won 25-15, 25-15 to go 1-0 (CCC) 2-1 (overall).
The Lady Buccs have the weekend to refocus before traveling to Anna on Monday.
Covington’s 8th grade won at Tri-County North 2-0 and the 7th grade also won 2-0. Both teams are 2-0 to start this season.
