LADY BUCCS HONOR THE SENIORS WITH WIN...
Covington overcame a slow start to defeat Brookville in four sets in what was a memorable night for five seniors who are the glue of the 2020 season.
Seniors Dustina Wills, Ellery Reck, Bethany Weldy, Hillary Hoying and Alyssa Kimmel pose for a picture on Senior Night.

AUGUST 25, 2020 - COVINGTON
Imagine what these five seniors have gone through in what has been a very unpredictable year.

They’ve practiced all summer - not knowing for sure if they would even have a senior season.

After all, they witnessed the Class of 2020 seniors see their spring sports season taken from them due to Covid-19.

They’ve seen or heard about the weekly (and sometimes daily) reports offered by the Governor of Ohio on Covid-19 throughout the summer - sometimes with positive news and many times with negative news.

And then, they had to wait until just a week ago to find out they were going to have a season, BUT that season would be played under strict guidelines with limited crowds and within social distancing measures where the bleachers could only be filled at 15% capacity and everyone had to wear a mask.

Yet, through it all these kids - led by the seniors - continued to grind, maintained a positive attitude and persevere.

So it is fitting for Covington’s five seniors (Dustina Wills, Ellery Reck, Bethany Weldy, Hillary Hoying and Alyssa Kimmel) to walk away from the home gym on senior night with a win - a night where they should have been celebrated in front of a (more typical) packed house.

“Senior Night”, on the second game of the season? Yes, it should be and had to be due to the uncertainty of the rest of the season. At any time the Governor can pull the rug out from under everyone at any time. Kudos to the Athletic Aepartment at Covington High School for making sure the seniors had their night.

And what a night it was as the Lady Buccs overcame a slow start to defeat a very good Brookville team in four sets, 18-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-21.

"This was a big game for us for a number of reasons, one to play hard for the Seniors, two they beat us last year and three they are a solid D-III program,” said Covington coach Lonnie Cain. "I was very happy with our intensity and ball control. We maintained our energy throughout the match and played hard."

COVINGTON STATS:
Ellery Reck - 41 assists, 4 kills, 9 digs, 2 aces
Nigella Reck - 15 kills, 13 digs, 1 ace
Carlie Besecker - 17 kills, 13 digs, 1 ace
Lauren York - 6 kills
Emmaline Kiser - 2 kills, 11 digs, 1 solo block, 2 aces
Alyssa Kimmel - 2 aces, 6 digs
Hillary Hoying - 7 digs

The win boosts Covington’s record to 1-1 as the Lady Buccs open up league play on Thursday at rival Newton.
