October 4, 2018 - Covington
If Thursday's thrilling four-set win over Brookville is any indication, the Covington Lady Buccs appear to be peaking heading into the final stretch of the regular season before tournaments begin shortly thereafter.

Brookville came into the contest as a very talented volleyball team with a 14-6 record, but Covington - who has now won four straight - played its most inspiring volleyball of the season to come away with a win in four sets; 25-18, 7-25, 25-20, 25-23.

"I am very proud of my team," said Covington coach Lonnie Cain. "We just beat a team that had double the wins that we currently have, so this is a big win."

And Covington had to overcome some adversity along the way.

After winning the first set 25-18, the Lady Buccs found themselves down in the second set 3-9 before three consecutive points gave Covington momentum. Another fourth straight point appeared to follow on a ball that was originally ruled as a touch by Brookville, but eventually overturned after further discussion. Covington never could recover and dropped the second set 7-25.

Needing to regroup mentally, Covington was able to gain some confidence by jumping out to a 7-2 lead early in the third set. Brookville was able to battle back to cut the deficit to 12-11, but the Lady Buccs reclaimed control to pull away for a 25-20 win.

"We regrouped after a terrible second set," Cain said. "I saw a lot of effort from the girls tonight."

With emotion and momentum on its side, Covington was able to close out the match in a back-and-forth fourth set where it held Brookville off for a 25-23 win.

It was the conclusion of a big week for Covington, who just seven days earlier held a 4-11 record before starting the winning streak against Twin Valley South.

Now, 8-11 on the season with a win against a quality team, the Lady Buccs look forward to the tournament draw on Sunday.

"Tournament draw is this Sunday, so hopefully this win will give us a boost of confidence," said Cain as his team closes out the regular season with three games next week. "We head into our final week of regular season and then Sectional play at Brookville."
