AUGUST 30, 2018 - COVINGTON
After opening the season against three of the better teams in the area, the Covington Lady Buccs were looking for their first win of the young season against rival Bethel in the Cross County Conference opener on Thursday.
Unfortunately, an improved Bethel team combined with untimely mistakes by the Lady Buccs led to a three-set defeat to drop Covington to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the league.
"Bethel is much improved from last season. I was impressed with their energy and overall skill level on the floor," said Covington coach Lonnie Cain. "We need to match the energy of our opponent and stop worrying about our mistakes - we need to move on and be mentally tougher when the pressure is on."
A sluggish start led to a 17-25 defeat in the opening set, but Covington was in position to even the match in a pivotal second set. Unfortunately serving and hitting errors by the Lady Buccs turned the momentum into Bethel's favor and the Lady Bees were able to take advantage with a 28-26 win to game a two set lead.
From there Bethel held off Covington once again in the third set to cap off the three-set sweep, 13-25, 25-20, 26-24.
For Covington, Lillian Hamilton led the way with 16 kills, while Ellery Reck had 15 assists.
"It was great to see Lilli finally start connecting out of the middle," Cain said. "However, we need more than one consistent offensive weapon."
And with a young team, Cain knows it will take time for his squad to come together.
"Hopefully we can get a couple good practices in and have a great match next time we hit the floor," he said. "We travel to Ansonia next Tuesday and nothing is a given with our young team."
Ellery Reck - 15 assists, 2 kills
Makenzee Maschino - 8 assists, 1 kill, 1 ace
Alyssa Kimmel - 4 kills, 1 ace
Lillian Hamilton - 16 kills, 1 solo block
Makenna Gostomsky - 4 kills
Olivia Mohler - 2 kills
Maci White - 2 aces
Tori Quinter - 1 ace
Covington Junior Varsity won 13-25, 25-20, 26-24. The JV squad is 1-3, 1-0.
Covington looks to regroup in it quest for win number one on Tuesday at Ansonia.
