Youth is a good thing when you know with time, experience and coaching that talent will hopefully lead to great things.
Freshman and sophomores mixed in with a handful of juniors will eventually blossom into something special if the kids stay united. Unfortunately, the process consists of frustrating nights along the way.
It takes time and patients and that's the situation the Covington Lady Buccs volleyball team is in as it hosted Fairlawn in the home opener on Monday.
Playing without any seniors on the roster, it was a rough night – a night of many lessons learned in a three-games-to-zero defeat at the hands of the Jets.
Effort wasn't lacking by any means, but it was inconsistency that was Covington's downfall – an inconsistency in all aspects of the game. For every impressive kill or rally by the Lady Buccs to earn a single point, there were mistakes that snowballed for big runs by Fairlawn.
Adrenaline from playing in front of the hometown crowd led to a 6-3 Covington lead in the opening game. But Fairlawn's experience took over as it took advantage of Covington mistakes en route to a 25-10 win.
The Lady Buccs never could recover from there and fell in the final two games 25-9 and 25-7.
The loss drops Covington's record to 0-2, but the season is still young – much like the Lady Buccs.
