COVINGTON SWEEPS NEWTON...
The Covington Lady Buccs overcame slow starts in all three games to beat rival Newton 25-20, 25-16 and 25-22.

SEPTEMBER 4, 2012 - PLEASANT HILL
In a matchup between two young volleyball teams, Covington outlasted rival Newton in three close games, 25-20, 25-16 and 25-22.

"A win is a win and we'll take it any way we can get it," said Covington coach Ashley Miller. "It's a big win because it's our first win on the road and we go a win without playing our best volleyball."

Newton jumped out to early leads in each of the three games, but Covington seemed to always put together a run late to pull away with wins.

"We've never come out fast and ready to play," Miller said. "For some reason we always seem to get out to a slow start. That's something we need to work on."

After taking the first game 25-20, Newton jumped out to a 12-5 lead.

But seven straight service points by Anna Snyder tied the score to force a Newton timeout and then the senior served three more points.

From there, Covington cruised to take a two-game lead.

Once again Newton jumped out to an early lead in the third game and Covington gradually chipped away until overtaking the Indians down the stretch for a deciding victory.

Covington was led statistically by Jenna Rindler's 11 kills, 20 digs by Jessica Dammeyer and 29 assists from Shelby Waag.

In junior varsity action, Covington won in three games, 25-20, 20-25 and 25-23.

The Lady Buccs, now 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the CCC, host Mississinawa Valley on Thursday.

Freshman Brooke Gostomsky goes up for a block against Newton.
