LADY BUCCS BEAT NEWTON IN THREE...
Despite the inconsistent play, the Covington Lady Buccs improved to 2-0 with a three-game sweep of Newton.
SEPTEMBER 1, 2011 - COVINGTON
It wasn't the sharpest form of volleyball, but the Covington Lady Buccs managed to overcome inconsistent play to defeat Newton in three games, 25-20, 26-24 and 25-19.
"We were too inconsistent tonight," said Covington Lindsey Sullenberger. "We got up on them 16-5 in the first game and then let them back into the game. We did the same in the third game, got a 16-8 lead and then started feeling too comfortable and let them back into the game."
And the inconsistency nearly cost Covington the second game as Newton was within striking distance, only to fall short 26-24.
"Give them (Newton) credit, they were scrappy," Sullenberger said. "But we lack the killer instinct that when you get a team down, keep them down. The girls want to have it (killer instinct), but they haven't learned how to do it. It's all about attitude."
Even though Covington holds a 2-0 record, Sullenberger knows her team has a ways to go to become the team she thinks the Lady Buccs are capable of being.
"I know we can be a pretty good volleyball team," she said. "When we get the mentality that we want to win every point, we'll be hard to beat. Until then, we'll be inconsistent like we were tonight."
Caitlyn Crawford led Covington with 17 kills, while Zoe Reck had 19 digs and Shelby Wagg had 24 assists.
The Lady Buccs (2-0, 1-0 in the CCC) travel to Mississinawa Valley on Tuesday.
JV RESULT: Covington defeated Newton in three games; 28-26, 24-26, 25-17.
