It wasn't easy as Covington went to five games, but the Lady Buccs made things happen when they needed it in a season-opening win over Fairlawn.
AUGUST 29, 2011 - COVINGTON
After taking the first two games, the Covington Lady Buccs volleyball team found themselves in a dogfight with Fairlawn and had to hold on for a 3-2 win.
"We played nervous," said Covington coach Lindsey Sullernberger. "Mentally, we let our mistakes linger. We had a roller coaster ride mentally."
Covington opened the match with a 25-23 win in the first game, holding off a late rally by Fairlawn.
The momentum continued in the second game as Covington cruised to a 25-18 win and appeared to be in complete control of the match.
"We came out strong (in the first two games," Sullenberger said.
But server-receive and communication issues on the floor became Covington achilles heel in the third game as Fairlawn took advantage of one mistake after another in building a 17-11 lead.
The Lady Buccs cut the margin to 17-15, but Fairlawn pulled away down the stretch for a 25-17 win to cut the game to two games to one.
With momentum on its side, Fairlawn forced the contest into a fifth game with a 25-21 win.
"We had a breakdown in games two and three," explained Sullenberger. "But this was different than last year. Last year we would have folded if a team came back like that. We didn't fold."
Covington didn't fold and rallied in the final game after battling back-and-forth early on to escape with a 15-10 win and the match 3-2.
Caitlyn Crawford had a big night with 24 kills and 12 digs, while Shelby Kihm had 16 kills. Zoe Reck had 18 digs and Hannah Pond recorded 12 digs.
