|LADY BUCCS SWEEP ARCANUM...
Covington continued to take steps forward with a convincing three-game sweep of Arcanum on Thursday.
SEPTEMBER 15, 2011 - COVINGTON
Looking for improvement in each outing, Covington coach Lindsey Sullenberger had reason to be happy after her team dispatched a traditionally strong and well coached Arcanum team in three games, 25-18, 25-15, 25-15.
"We played better tonight (than the last outing)," said Sullenberger. "We did start out a little slow, but once we got going we played well."
The first game was back and forth with the score tied at 13-13. But Covington's strength at the net began to take over and the Lady Buccs outscored the Trojans 12-5 the rest of the way for a 25-18 win.
"We're doing a better job of mixing things up, setting up different hitters," Sullenberger explained. "We had seven girls with kills tonight."
Caitlyn Crawford recorded 15 kills, while Haley Reames and Zoe Reck had four kills each. Shelby Waag, Morgan Arbogast and Sami Snyder also had kills.
"(Haley) Reames hit the ball really well tonight," Sullenberger explained. "And Sami Snyder had a nice kill from the back row, but she really did a nice job of defending tips."
Defense has also been a work in progress, but Covington made strides in that aspect of the game as well.
"We played better defensively, but we're still leaving the middle open a little too often," stated Sullenberger. "A lot of that is our transition, but we'll keep working on it and continue to get better."
After gaining confidence and momentum with a strong effort down the stretch of the first game, Covington rolled through the second and third games with identical 25-15 scores.
"Once we got the momentum, we kept the pressure on, which is another thing we have worked on," said Sullenberger. "The goal is to be consistent and play at a high level."
Covington, 6-1 overall and 5-0 in the CCC, looks to take another step forward on Saturday at New Bremen against the host Cardinals and Anna.
