September 17, 2009 - COVINGTON
Twin Valley South has been a nemesis in the past for the Covington Lady Buccs volleyball team, but not Thursday night.
Behind a strong defensive attack, Covington cruised to a three-game sweep over South - all three games being won by the score of 25-20.
"We made some errors offensively that we are working through," said Covington coach Jim Smith. "The defense stayed strong to carry us through and make up for some of those things."
The win improves Covington to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the CCC.
"We are happy with our start to the season," Smith said. "But we do have a long way to go to get to where we want to be."
And, despite the unblemished record, Covington continues to develop throughout each match.
"The team was trying out some new things on the court," said Smith without getting specific. "We're trying things I think it will come together and work really nicely by the end of the season."
Alyssa Angle had her typical solid night with 25 assists, while Caitlyn Crawford recorded 12 kills and Rachel Rindler had 15 digs.
Josselyn Tobias has become a dependable serving threat this season as she led the team once again in aces with five.
"We have some goals we want to achieve and the girls continue to work hard," Smith said. "It (the hard work) showed tonight."
Covington looks to keep a good thing going on Saturday against perennial power Anna.
