LADY BUCCS STAKE THEIR CLAIM TO THE CCC TITLE...

Behind a balanced attack, the Covington Lady Buccs secured a share of the CCC title with a three-game sweep of Tri-Village.

OCTOBER 7, 2008 - COVINGTON
The Covington Lady Buccs made quick work of Tri-Village Tuesday in three games to lock up at least a share of the Cross County Conference title.

The only team standing in Covington's way in claiming the title outright is Newton, who the Lady Buccs play on Tuesday.

"We pretty much controlled the match throughout," said Covington coach Jim Smith after his team won by the scores of 25-13, 25-16 and 25-16. "We looked pretty sharp until Holly (Tobias) went down (in the second game). We sort of became a little lackadaisical at times after that."

After winning the first game 25-13, Covington was rolling through the season game until Tobias appeared to come down on the foot of a Tri-Village player under the net. The senior had to be helped off the floor by teammates Alyssa Angle and Shelby Hoblit.

"She twisted her ankle, but fortunately she'll be alright," Smith said in relief. "She's really been playing well and we'll need her in the tournament."

Tobias, who hasn't felt the best most of the season, has come on strong later in the season - making a strong case for Player of the Year honors in the CCC.

"She's just gotten better as the year went on," Smith continued. "She really played well against Ansonia. She had 16 kills in that game."

But the senior isn't Covington's only weapon.

Three girls, including Holly Tobias, had at least five kills. Kelsey Tobias led the team with six kills.

"We're pretty balanced and we showed that again tonight," Smith explained. "There's not one player you can key on. We had several girls record an equal amount of kills and several recorded some blocks. I think the balance we have will help us in the tournament."

At 14-7 overall and 10-1 in the CCC, Covington isn't looking ahead as a showdown with Newton comes first on Thursday.

Holly Tobias had Covington fans holding their breath after turning her ankle in the second game.
