AUGUST 29, 2008 COVINGTON
After winning the first game 25-18, the Covington Lady Buccs dropped three straight games to Mississinawa Valley on Thursday. It's Covington's second straight loss to start the second after being swept in three games by Fairlawn on Monday.
In a tightly contested contest throughout, the highlight for Covington came in the first game of the evening as the Lady Buccs took a 15-14 lead and extended it to 20-14.
Covington received kills from Emily Henry, Caitlin Crawford and Holly Tobias in the run.
The Lady Buccs then capped the effort with a 25-18 victory on the strength of another Tobias kill, a block and a kill by Alyssa Angle and an ace by Tobias on game point.
Tobias recorded six kills, two blocks and an ace in the first game alone.
Covington appeared to be well on its way to a 2-0 lead as it built a 13-9 lead on the strength of four more kills and two aces by Tobias.
But the senior rarely received a hitting opportunity the rest of the second game and managed just one more kill.
Mississinawa took advantage and gradually fought its way back to tie the score at 19-19.
The Blackhawks then outscored Covington 5-2 for to take a 24-21 lead and force a Covington timeout.
The Lady Buccs responded with three straight points to tie the score at 24-24 with a kill by Henry.
But Covington couldn't regain the lead and Mississinawa eventually captured a 28-26 win.
The third game was much as the second as neither team could gain much separation on the scoreboard. But the visitors managed to duplicate the effort of game two with a two-point victory, 26-24.
With two games slipping away at the end, Covington could never recover in the fourth game and fell 25-20 for a 3 games to 1 defeat.
The Lady Buccs drop to 0-2 on the season and 0-1 in the Cross County Conference.
Covington looks to rebound on Tuesday at Franklin Monroe.
