LADY BUCCS WIN SECOND STRAIGHT...

The Covington Lady Buccs captured their second straight victory with an impressive 3 games to 0 performance over Miami East.

SEPTEMBER 20, 2007 – COVINGTON
The Covington Lady Buccs used the momentum they captured Tuesday at National Trail to get off to a fast start in their Cross County Conference match-up with Miami East, Thursday.

After jumping out to an early 10-2 lead in the first game, Covington didn't let up en route to a three-game sweep of the visiting Vikings.

The victory was the second in a row and improved Covington's record to 3-8 overall and 3-4 in the Cross County Conference.

"I was definitely pleased with our performance against National Trail," said Covington coach Jim Smith. "We fell behind 19-4 and came back to win three games to one. To come back and play well again tonight is big for us.

The girls are having fun and that's what it's about. They have kept a positive attitude and worked very hard. We're starting to see the results."

After capturing the first game 25-12 and the second game 25-16, Covington found itself in a battle in the third game.

Miami East surged to a 10-8 lead and held on to the lead until late in the game.

Covington eventually took a 24-23 lead and held serve with a chance at game-point.

But a kill by Miami East tied the score at 24-24 to put the pressure back on the Lady Buccs.

Threatened at a possible fourth game, Covington responded with two straight points to close out the game 26-24 and end the contest.

"We were able to play some of the younger kids tonight and that was good," Smith said. "Meagan Grant came in and really set well. Overall, we struggled a little with our setting so our hitters couldn't get going like we wanted, but we're improving."

Smith is also pleased with the improvement of his team's defense.

"We're running a different defense, but the girls have picked up up very well," he said. "Our serve receive was solid and our passing was good. The girls were in position to dig balls and keep them (Miami East) from getting easy points."

The Lady Buccs look to extend their winning streak on Saturday as they travel to Minster for the Minster Tournament.

"We'll try and build on this (the two-game win streak) over the weekend," Smith concluded. "I think we are comparable to the teams we'll face and we should compete very well."
