COVINGTON ADVANCES WITH IN OVER ANSONIA...

The Covington Lady Buccs defeated Ansonia in five game for the second time this season to advance in the Sectional Tournament.

OCTOBER 13, 2007 - SIDNEY
Covington coach Jim Smith couldn't have been any more pleased with the effort his Lady Buccs gave in a five-game marathon victory over Ansonia in the first round of the sectional tournament at Sidney High School, Saturday.

"We really had to work hard for this one," Smith said. "They (Ansonia) was very scrappy and we earned every point we got. The girls really played hard today."

Covington lost both the first and third games by the score of 22-25, but managed to take the second game 25-15, the fourth game 25-17 and the deciding game 15-8.

The outcome was similar to Covington's victory over Ansonia a week ago. In that game the Lady Buccs won in five games as well.

But the way Covington won was different.

"The last time we played them their middle hitter (Leslie Pittsenbarger) really hurt us," Smith said. "We did a good job of blocking her at the net this time. She started trying to tip the ball instead of attacking."

Ansonia did have some success from the right side, however.

"Their right side hitter hurt us more today," Smith continued. "We didn't see that much of her the first time we played them, so that was an adjustment we had to make during the match."

But it was Ansonia's libero that made an impression on Covington.

"Their libero was phenomenal," Smith said. "She was everywhere. It seemed like she was getting everything up today."

Still, Covington had enough success utilizing its own middle hitters throughout the match.

"We relied heavily on our hitters today," Smith explained. "We had a ton of attack attempts and eight of our girls had kills. Alyssa Angle had a great day from the outside and we did a good job attacking from the middle."

The Lady Buccs recorded 129 attack attempts, which indicated a solid defensive effort and good setting.

"After the first game our defense was outstanding," Smith praised. "Our serve receive was solid and we were able to get into our offense. We mixed it up pretty good today."

With the victory Covington advances to the second round on Tuesday. The Lady Buccs will face the Houston versus Newton winner.
