BACK TO WINNING...

The Lady Buccs rebounded from their first loss of the season to defeat Tri-County North.

SEPTEMBER 14, 2006 –COVINGTON
After suffering their first loss of the season just two days ago, the Covington Lady Buccs regrouped with a 3 games to 1 victory over Tri-County North. The win improves Covington's record to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the Cross County Conference.

"I'm pleased that we were able to put the loss to South behind us and get a win tonight," said Covington coach Stephanie Robinson. "We started out playing sluggish, but finished strong."

The visiting Panthers put a scare in Covington by taking a 25-23 win in the first game. Both teams had their chances to take the momentum, but missed serves kept the game close throughout.

With the game tied at 23-23, Covington missed on a serve and Tri-County North took advantage by closing out the game.

"We made too many mistakes and they (North) capitalized on them," Robinson said. "They are a gritty team. They hustled on defense and played with emotion. We had to match their intensity."

Covington did pick up the intensity level in the second game to tie the match with a 25-11 win. Alex Christian and Michelle Barhorst found their groove hitting the ball, which sparked the Covington rally.

"We woke up in the second game," said Robinson. "Al (Alex) and Michelle got us going with their hitting and we started moving our feet better on defense."

With momentum on its side, Covington closed out the match by winning the final two games by the scores of 25-18 and 25-17.

Senior Ashley Angle capped the evening by serving six straight points in the final game. Angle and Meredith Tobias combined for 15 service points in the final game alone.

"Ashley and Meredith served very well," explained Robinson. "That's what you expect from your seniors and they came through when we needed it."

Although it wasn't their best performance, Robinson was pleased with how her team bounced back from adversity.

"I'm proud of how the girls responded coming off of a disappointing loss," concluded Robinson. "Sometimes when you lose like we did to South it can take a while to put it behind you. The girls did that tonight by closing out this match with a strong effort."

Covington returns to action on Saturday in tri-match with Anna and New Bremen at Anna High School. The first game is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am.

JV RESULTS:
Covington defeated Tri-County North 2 games to 1.
