| CLOSIN' THE DOOR ON ARCANUM...
The Lady Buccs put away a talented Arcanum team in four games to remain unbeaten on the season.
SEPTEMBER 7, 2006 ARCANUM
Throughout the first three games of the season Covington coach Stephanie Robinson has been waiting for her team to play to the level they are capable of and to display their killer instinct.
In the first and fourth games of a 3 games to 1 victory over a talented Arcanum team, Robinson had finally gotten the results she was looking for.
"We played our best volleyball of the season in the first game and the fourth game," said Robinson. "If we can play like that over an entire match, we'll be tough to beat."
Covington opened the match with a convincing 25-13 win in the first game. Alex Christian was as dominant as ever recording 7 kills in the game.
"Alex just dominated the first game," Robinson said. "It was impressive to watch."
Things quickly turned in the second game. Arcanum took the momentum with a 19-9 lead.
Covington managed to cut the margin to 22-20, but the Lady Trojans even the match at 1-1 with a 25-22 win.
"We stopped moving our feet and communicating," described Robinson. "We are our own worst enemy. We killed ourselves with mental mistakes."
Both teams looked to gain an edge in the third game as the game was tied five times.
With the game tied at 18-18, Covington outscored Arcanum 7-3 to take a one-game lead with the 25-21 win.
"We needed to pull out that game to get the momentum back," Robinson said. "It really gave us a spark."
With momentum on their side of the court, the Lady Buccs wouldn't relinquish control of the match. They closed the door on Arcanum with perhaps the best performance of the season, 25-11.
"This is what I've been looking for from these girls," said Robinson. "When you have a team down, put them away. End it. That's what we did in the last game."
With the 3 games to 1 victory, Covington remains unbeaten on the season at 4-0 and 3-0 in CCC play.
The Lady Buccs return to action on Monday as they host Russia.
