It was a memorable and historic two days at the regional track meet in Troy as twelve Covington athletes earned births at next week's state meet by finishing in the top four in their respective events. It also led to high team finishes as the girls took third with 46 team points and the boys tied Purcell Marion for third with 45 team points.
Two Covington athletes claimed regional championships as Cade Harshbarger won the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 40.48 and Rayna Horner won the 400 meter dash in the time of 58.09. Harshbarger also qualified for state in the 110 meter hurdles by taking second in the time of 15.21, while Horner joins teammates Morgan Lowe, Paige Boehringer and Breanna Kimmel at state in the 4x400 meter relay by finishing third in the time of 3:59.74.
Like Horner, Kimmel will compete in two events as she also qualified in the 100 meter dash with a fourth place finish in the time of 12.90. This will be Kimmel's third trip to state as a junior.
Also qualifying for state in two events is Lauren Christian, who finished runner-up in both the shot put and discus throw. Christian threw 39-09.50 in the shot and 118-10.00 in the discus.
Zach Parrett and Jett Murphy stamped their tickets to state by taking third in their respective events - Parrett with a height of 6-02.00 in the high jump and Murphy with a height of 14-04.00 in the pole vault.
The boys 4x400 meter relay team of Zane Barnes, Gray Harshbarger, Jayce Pond and Nathan Lyle round out the Buccaneer competitors to qualify for state as they finished second in the time of 3:26.41.
