WEST MILTON - Several Covington boys and girls advanced to next week's regional track with top four finishes in the district meet at Milton-Union on Saturday.
First, Ben Miller, who is no stranger to the big stage, advanced in four events as he swept the 110 and 300 meter hurdles and then led the 4x100 meter relay team to a district championship. Ben won the 110's in the time of 15.20 and the 300's in the time of 40.33. The senior then teamed with Ethan Herron, Shane Straw and Brandon Magee to win the 4x100 in the time of 45.02.
Senior Alex Schilling was equally impressive in winning the 1,600 in the time of 4:30.48 to advance to regional, while senior Nathan Dunn advance in the 3,200 by finishing second in the time of 9:47.36.
For the girls, it was a bitter-sweet day.
The 4x200 relay team of Shae Robinson, Heidi Cron, Tori Lyle and Breanna Kimmel won a district championship in the time of 1:48.47 and the same four girls teamed up to qualify for regionals with a fourth place finish in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:15.20.
Unfortunately, the 4x100 team of Robinson, Cron, Kailyn Pond and Kimmel dropped the baton and was disqualified.
Junior Carly Shell showed she is back at full strength after a near career-ending injury a year ago by qualifying for regionals with a third place finish in the 1,600 in the time of 5:19.73.
The remaining Buccaneer athletes will compete on Wednesday and Friday in Troy with a chance to qualify for the state meet.
