Covington senior Jackie Siefring committed to run track at Akron University, fulfilling a goal achieved through hard work and dedication.
Jackie Siefring owns school records in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles.

Covington High School senior Jackie Siefring has some impressive credentials in track and field as she owns five school records, placed 3rd at the state meet in the 300 meter hurdles and 4th in the long jump, and won an indoor state championship this past spring in the long jump.

With still more to accomplish over the remaining of her senior season, Siefring has already secured her future beyond high school by committing to compete at the collegiate level for Akron University.

"I'm excited," said Siefring of her future opportunity. "Akron has a great reputation with its track program and academic standards."

Siefring will study Biology with plans to ultimately go to medical school after her career at Akron is complete.

"Akron has the program I'm looking for in pre-med," she said. "It's a perfect fit for me in getting the education I want."

And the financial assistance Siefring will receive due to her athletic and academic accomplishments at Covington High School will help greatly. Among her academic accomplishments was a recent induction into the National Honors Society and she is in the running for Valedictorian in her class.

"I'm getting a lot of financial assistance through athletics and academics," Siefring stated. "That helps a lot because I know I won't have a debt to pay once I finish school."

Siefring is well rounded on the track as evident by the school records she owns at Covington; the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 100 meter hurdles, 300 meter hurdles and long jump. That will only help her once she arrives on campus due to the plans the Akron track program has for her.

"They want me compete in the Heptathlon in outdoor meets and the Pentathlon at indoor meets," explained Siefring. "I also plan on running the open 400 meter hurdles."

Being divers on the track doesn't come without hard work and Siefring has had plenty of people help her become the athlete she is.

"My parents (Vern and Carmen Siefring) have been there for me a lot," she said. "They have worked with me the most, whether is going out to the track and getting extra work in or driving me to indoor meets. They've been there for me the most."

She's also had support from her coaches.

"Coach (Kyle) Moore and Coach (Ron) Shultz helped me get into some indoor meets and planned some off-season workouts for me," she said. "Coach T (Dave Tobias) has helped me in outdoor, working with me and letting me compete in different events."

Siefring has also benefitted from the expertise of personal coaches and trainers.

"I also go to a personal coach that helps me refine my technique with the high jump and hurdles," Siefring continued. "He keeps tabs on me and monitors my progress. I also do some off-season training with a personal trainer."

The work Siefring has put in is a perfect example to others as to what it takes to reach lofty goals and she feels that work ethic will make the transition from high school to college that much smoother.

"I'm use to working hard, so that shouldn't be a problem," she said. "I have big goals I'd like to achieve, but I focus on working hard and improving every day. I know I haven't reached my full potential yet, but if I improve every day than I'll be happy with whatever happens."

Until then, Siefring has one more month to ad to her collection of school records at Covington.

"I don't know," she chuckled when asked it she was out to break more records. "If it happens, it happens. I'm just working hard to get better."

Hard work for athletes like Jackie Siefring is never done.

Jackie Siefring is the school record holder in the long jump and also won an indoor state championship in the event.
