MAY 24, 2014 - WEST MILTON
It was a bitter sweet weekend for the Covington boys and girls track teams at the 2014 District Championships at Milton-Union High School as several competitors advanced to the regional meet and others suffered through some misfortune in their quest to move on.
First, the girls 4x800 relay team was a solid favorite to not only qualify for the regional meet, but make some noise at state due to the times the girls have recorded this year. Unfortunately, the team of Heidi Cron, Anna Dunn, Hannah Retz and Carly Shell was disqualified for impeding another team during an handoff, a controversial ruling that not only infuriated the Covington supporters, but witnesses from other schools - witnesses who felt the Covington runner had every right to the inside lane because it was leading the race at the time of the infraction.
Second, the boys 4x200 relay team was well on its way to the regional meet, but dropped the baton on the handoff - eventually finishing sixth, less than three seconds behind the Versailles team that qualified in fourth.
Third, senior Dalton Bordeon was in the thick of things in the 300 meter hurdles, but caught his trail leg on the hurdle around the turn and fell to the track - ending his quest to get out.
Fourth, senior A.J. Ouellette was limited to one relay event due to an ongoing injury to his hamstring. Ouellete, who has constantly run the 100 meter dash in the low 11 seconds, watched the winning time in the event come in at 11.40.
Lastly, Carly Shell, a state qualifier last year as a freshman, came up short in her quest to get back to state in the 3200 due to injuries she has battled through throughout the year. The Covington sophomore left everything she had on the track, but couldn't overcome the pain from her injuries to finish in the top four.
What was sweet for the Covington track program was the fact that several other performers not only qualified, but established records in the process.
First, Jackie Siefring, who has had an amazing recovery from and ACL injury through hard work and determination, was in "Beast Mode" as swept all four events she competed in. The senior won the 100 meter dash (12.68), set a new meet record in the 100 meter hurdles (14.96), cruised to a victory in the 300 meter hurdles (46.30) and won the long jump (16-08.50). She did all of this after being forced to sit out the finals in each event at the Cross County Conference Championships a week ago due to an injury.
Joining Siefring at Regionals for the girls will be freshman Anna Dunn and junior Heidi Cron. Dunn finished third in the 1600 meter run in the time of 5:24.61, while Cron took fourth in the 400 meter dash in the time of 1:03.01.
The second part of the "sweet" for Covington was the performance of senior Lane White, who was forced to forgo his quest at state gory a year ago due to an injury. After an entire year of intensive training, White established a new meet and school record in the 400 meter dash in the time of 48.43 and then tied the meet record in the 200 meter dash in the time of 22.40.
He was also a member of the 4x400 meter relay team that finished second to qualify for districts (3:33.12), a team that consisted of White, Matt Carder, Brandon Magee and Alex Shilling.
Ben Miller also had a huge weekend as he qualified for regionals in both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles. The junior set a new personal record in the 110 meter hurdles in the time of 15.16 and then ran the 300 distance in a time of 40.61.
Lastly, the boy's 4x100 meter relay team qualified for reguiohals with a second place finish in the time of 45.10. That team consisted of Dalton Bordelon, A.J. Ouellette, Ben Miller and Brandon Magee.
In regards to the team standings, the girls finished third with 68 points and the boys finished fifth with 68 points.
