BOYS WIN DISTRICT, GIRLS FINISH FOURTH...
It was another stellar performance by the boys and girls track teams at the district meet on Saturday.
The 2013 District Champion - Covington Buccaneers
BUCC BOYS CLAIM DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP...
MAY 25, 2013 - WEST MILTON
The Covington boys track team won a district championship on Saturday, edging Lehman Catholic for the title. Covington tallied 94.50 team points to 92 for the runner-up Cavaliers.

But it was a bittersweet victory for Covington as both Lane White and A.J. Ouellette came away with injuries - White being forced to scratch in the 400 and 200 as the favorite.

Ouellette was winning the finals of the 100 meter dash, but appeared to re-injure his hamstring 50 meter into the race. He still managed to qualify with a third place finish in the time of 11.47.

"It's kind of scary (when you have teammates who are injured)," said Covington senior Troy Cron. "I feel bad for those guys. I told Lane that I wish I could give him my hamstring because he has a lot more going for him than I do."

Cron doesn't give himself enough credit, but the senior did pick up the slack as he swept the 110 and 300 meter hurdles - winning the 300 in a school record time of 39.34. His time of 15.07 in the 110 meter hurdles was good enough to beat Taylor Cordell of West Liberty-Salem, a competitor who Cron has battled against throughout their high school careers.

"I have been going back and forth with that guy (Cordell) for the last two years," Cron said. "He really looked smooth in the prelims, so I kind of expected him to beat me. I have high expectations for myself, so it was kind of nice. I ran well in both races."

Dustin Fickert (800 meter run), Trent Tobias (pole vault) and Ryan Craft (high jump) all took second in individual events, while the 4x200 and 4x400 meter relay teams placed second as well.

Ouellette (100 meter dash), Ben Miller (110 meter hurdles) and Alex Schilling (1600 meter run) all took third, while Dalton Bordelon placed fourth in the 300 meter hurdles.

The 4x800 meter relay team also advanced to the regional meet with a fourth place finish.

LADY BUCCS FINISH FOURTH AT DISTRICT...
The Covington girls track team has competed all year long with a small roster, but one wouldn't know it by how high they continually place in the team standings.

Saturday at the district meet in West Milton things didn't change as the Lady Buccs placed 4th out of the 20 participating teams.

And once again it was junior standout Jackie Siefring leading the way as she won the 100 meter hurdles (15.22)and the 300 meter hurdles (44.72). She also placed second in the long jump (16-03.25) and fourth in the 100 meter dash (12.97). In all, Siefring broke three school records at the district meet, the 100 and 300 meter hurdles and the 100 meter dash with a 12.90 time in the prelims.

"I hate this day," joked Siefring after another impressive showing. "I am always nervous at this meet. But I ran strong in both hurdle races. They were both school records."

And Siefring credits the support she gets from her teammates and the Covington fans.

"All of the supporters from Covington on the curve is what gets me through it," she said. "I like being pushed and I like it that way."

Freshman Carly Shell also had a huge day as she won the 3200 meter run in the school record time of 11:25.50 and as a member of the 4x800 meter relay team that qualified for regional with a third place finish (9:57.80).

Senior Tara Snipes was also a member of the 4x800 meter relay team along with Shell, Julianna Yingst and Hannah Retz and will participate in the regional meet in three events. She placed second in the 800 meter run in a school record time of 2:17.90 and took third in the 1600 meter run (5:21.15).
