AN HISTORIC DAY FOR COVINGTON TRACK...
Three school records, a team runner-up title and state qualifiers in nine events - it doesn't get much better than that for the Covington track team.
The Buccaneer track team took regional runner-up honors as a team.
Troy Cron broke the school's 300 meter hurdle record on his way to state.
Dustin Fickert qualified for state in the 800 meter run.
Sam Christian heads to state in the discus after qualifying in the shot put on Wednesday.
MAY 25, 2012 - TROY
It was an historic night for Covington track as three school records fell and the Buccaneers finished as runner-up in the regional track meet at Troy on Friday. The Buccs finished with 52 team points, while Minster claimed the regional championship with 57 points.

"This is the best we've ever finished," said long-time Covington track coach Ron Schultz. "And we broke three school records today."

After Sam Christian qualified for state in the discus and the 4x800 relay team punched its ticket to the state meet on Wednesday, the Buccs saw athletes qualify in seven more events on Friday.

Sam Christian earned a state birth in his second event, taking fourth in the shot put with a toss of 51-11.00.

"It feels good," said Christian in regards to qualifying for state in two events. "I threw pretty well today, but I think I have more distance in me. My steps are a little off, but I'll work on that this week and hopefully do well at state."

Troy Cron continues to wreak havoc on the Covington hurdles records as he established a new record in the 300 meter hurdles to qualify for state. Cron broke the previous record held by Brock Iddings of 40.57 by coming in at 40.25. The junior hurdler also owns the 110 meter hurdles record of 15.07 set earlier in the year and qualified for state with a time of 15.23, good for third in the regional final.

"I felt good," said Cron. "Especially in the 300. I knew I had a good race."

Lane White had an historic day as well, taking down a record that has stood for 28 years. The sophomore broke Kelly Deeter's 400 meter dash record of 49.80 with a new record time of 49.43 in his go-to-state race.

White was also part of the 4x400 meter relay team that qualified for state and broke another record that has stood for 28 years. The previous record holders were Bob Hagoe, Jim Stickley, Matt Pond and Kelly Deeter, who set the record of 3:29.60 in 1984. The new record holders are Isaiah Winston, Alex Schilling, Dustin Fickert and Lane White with a time of 3:27.02.

Dustin Fickert was just .10 of a second off the pace of Ryan Stover's school record of 1:57.40 set in 1989 as he took fourth in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:57.50 to qualify for the state meet.

"This is my best time since last year," said Fickert. "I ran like a 1:59 last year, but haven't been able to get down to that until now."

The final Covington athlete who qualified for state was a very emotional moment for junior Tara Snipes, who fell just short of a state birth a year ago in heartbreaking fashion. But this time Snipes wasn't going to be denied as she emptied her tank in the 800 meter run, taking fourth in a time of 2:19.24 under 90-degree heat.

Falling short of state births for the Buccs were A.J. Ouellette, Alex Baskerville and Trent Tobias, but they helped earn team points that were essential in gaining runner-up honors as a team.

Ouellete finished sixth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11:45 despite battling through hamstring issues that have plagued him all season. It's a tough pill to swallow for the sophomore as he was running 11.2 prior to his injury.

"It started tightening up down the stretch," said Ouellette of his hamstring. "I felt pretty good until the final 20 meters."

Alex Baskerville came up short in the high jump, taking ninth in a competitive field with a height of 5-10.00.

Trent Tobias took eighth in the pole vault with a vault of 12-00, which earned the Buccs much-needed team points.

Covington takes to the track next Friday in Columbus.
