GIRLS 2ND, BOYS 5TH AT LEAGUE MEET...

MAY 15, 2010 - WEST ALEXANDRIA
The Covington girls took second place, while the boys finished fifth in the 2010 Cross County Conference Track & Field Championships on Saturday.

The girls finished with 91.50 team points, behind only Miami East, who won the title with 148 points.

The boys accumulated 50 points, falling just behind Arcanum's 51 points in a battle for fourth in the league. Bethel claimed the league title with 160 points.

Claiming individual championships for Covington was freshman Jenna Rindler and senior Ben Christian. Rindler won the discus throw for the girls with a distance of 102'7", while Christian claimed the title in the shot put with a throw of 46'11.5".

Christian nearly captured the discuss throw championship, recording the longest distance of 146'7" until Bethel's Scott Masin launched a throw of 149'7" in his second to last throw to move Christian into second place.

Freshman Tara Snipes had a memorable performance and showed signs of dominance in years to come. It took two meet records by Miami East's Julie Accurso to beat Snipes as the Covington freshman took second to Accurso in both the 1600 (5:31.60) and 800 (2:23.70) meter runs. With Accurso graduating, Snipes should be a heavy favorite to claim league titles in 2011.

The girls also had an impressive performance in the 3200 meter run as Emily Fields took second (13:00.00) and Erin Waterfall placed third (13:18.20).

The boys received a bad break prior to the finals as top distance runner Willy Hoffert was unable to compete due to the flu. The team points Hoffert would have likely gained would have moved the Buccs into fourth place in the team standings.
