|2009 COVINGTON BUCCS BOYS TRACK TEAM...
With the loss of a talented senior class, the Covington boys track team looks to reload in 2009.
The Covington track team lost a talented senior class from a year ago, but returning competitors combined with younger kids new to the program makes the transition to the 2009 season smoother.
Covington's strength in 2009 will be the distance events as the squad returns a complete line-up of talented runners in Willie Hoffert, Levi VanDeGrift, Harry Hicks, Zack Shilt and Brian Hackett - each with experience in Cross Country.
Plus, Darrell Thobe joins the team after suffering an arm injury that prevents him from playing baseball. Thobe is also an experienced runner through Cross Country, which gives Covington flexibility in mid to long distance relays.
Replacing record-setting hurdler and long jumper Brock Iddings will be difficult, but Harry Hicks is looking to fill the void. Others are capable as well, including Jeff Zimmerman and Tyler Noffsinger, but the line-up hasn't been determined due to the uncertainty in several events.
The loss of Jake Wise in the shot and discuss will also be felt, but junior Adam Miller should help ease the transition. Youngsters Sam Christian, Cody Minnich and Jamie Hess will compete for action as well. Christian was a standout at the junior high level and looks to have an impact in high school as well.
Sprint events are also up in the air, but several runners bring speed and quickness.
Juniors Teddy Hale and Jeff Zimmerman, along with sophomores Tyler Noffsinger and Trey Stewart give Covington some options in sprints and short distance relays.
Hale is also a capable high jumper and long jumper, while Zimmerman and Noffsinger have the ability to excel in the long jump.
With sixteen kids on the team shifting events throughout the season is in the cards as Covington looks to position itself to challenge in each meet.
