APRIL 14, 2021 - COVINGTON
Covington took a while to get rolling, but once hits started finding gaps the Lady Buccs rode a wave of momentum to upend Troy 11-9 on Wednesday at Covington High School.
Troy scored a pair of runs in the top of the first and Covington matched the effort with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning.
But runs were hard to come by for Covington as Troy built a 5-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth. The damage the Trojans inflicted would have been more if it weren’t for a diving catch in right field by Rai-Shell Reed to get the Lady Buccs out of a jam.
Covington used the momentum to plate five runs in the fourth inning with the big hit coming on a home run by Nigella Reck.
Troy tied the score at 7-7 with two runs in the top of the fifth, but Covington’s hot bats put the game away with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Nigella Reck and Mara Newhouse had the hot bats in the middle the lineup with Reck going 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBI and two runs scored and Newhouse going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Meg Rogers went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI and scored a run.
Defensively for Covington, Reaghan Lemp and Rai’Shell Reed made huge plays in the contest, while Erika Gostomsky got the start in the circle and Meg Rogers entered midway through in relief.
Covington hosts Bethel tomorrow night.
