APRIL 12, 2017 - COVINGTON
The Covington Lady Buccs saw a change of pace on Wednesday in a CCC matchup against Miami East, but was still able to use a nine-run second inning to spark a 10-0 run-rule victory in five innings.
"The pitching was different from what we've seen lately and it was tough for the girls to adjust," said Covington coach Mechelle Heitkamp after her team connected on nine hits. "But defensively we played probably our best game of the year. This was our first game where we didn't have any errors and that's nice to see."
After a scoreless first inning where Covington stranded a pair of runners, the Lady Buccs scored at will in the bottom of the second - plating nine runs.
And after scoring a run in the bottom of the third the Lady Buccs were looking for more as they had a runner on first with one out. But a missed sign resulted into a double play that ended the threat.
"We were aggressive on the bases, but we missed a few signs that probably cost us some runs," Heitkamp said. "One (missed sign) led to the double play and those are the types of things we have to clean up."
Fortunately Covington freshman Kenzie Long was in a groove in her first varsity action in the circle. Long limited Miami East to just one hit all night and nearly had the no-hitter, but a ball hit shallow to center fell just out of reach of a hustling Justice Warner.
"I know she didn't make the play, but it was a great effort Justice gave to try an deny them their only hit of the game," praised Heitkamp. "Not too many girls get that close to making that play."
For Long, it was a great performance in her first start at the high school level.
"Kenzie did a nice job pitching and Addison (Metz) did a nice job behind the plate," Heitkamp said. "I really wanted to save Lexie (Long) and Emma (Dammeyer) for tomorrow night and Kenzie allowed us to do that. She gives us more options."
Lexie Long and Makenna Gostomsky both connected on a pair of hit a piece, while Emma Dammeyer drove in three runs, Addison Metz drove on two runs Kenzie Long drove in two runs.
The win boosts Covington's record to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the CCC. The Lady Buccs travel to Greenville tomorrow.
