MAY 3, 2017 - BRADFORD
For four innings it was a typical Covington - Bradford softball game, tightly contested with stingy defense leading to timely outs.
Covington scored a run in the first and another in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead and Bradford cut the advantage in half with a run in the bottom of the fourth. It was a pitching and defensive dual as Covington's Kenzie Long and Bradford's Tatyana Cotrell kept opposing hitters off balance and the defensives behind them made play-after-play with runners in scoring position.
It was a matter of which team could break through for a big inning and that's what Covington did in the top of the fifth by scoring five runs - the final run coming on a solo home run by senior Lexie Long.
Covington then increased its cushion with a run in the sixth and another in the seventh to push its lead to 9-1 with Bradford coming to the plate for its final at bat.
And Bradford, who was playing inspired softball in honoring its four seniors on Senior Night, gave it a great effort in an attempt to pull off the miraculous comeback. It scored two runs and had a pair of runners on with one out - the one out being a key play at short by Sarah Hubbard, who threw a Railroader out at second from her back after diving for a ground ball.
With Bradford threatening for more runs, Kenzie Long gathered a slow grounder up the middle and threw to first for the second out and followed by recording a strikeout for the final out of the game and a 9-3 Covington win.
Long recorded the win as she went the distance in the circle. She struck out five and walked just two while only giving up four hits.
Cotrell, who threw very well, went five and two-thirds of an inning before surrendering to Holly Rosengarten. The Bradford pitching duo combined to strike out five batters and walk five.
Covington hit the ball well with 17 hits as a team, but left 12 runners stranded in the contest.
The Lady Buccs improve to 14-8 overall and 9-2 in the CCC with a critical conference match slated against Franklin Monroe tomorrow night.
