APRIL 1, 2016 - COVINGTON
Coming off of their first defeat of the season on Wednesday against Centerville and then having Thursday's game against Tri-Village cancelled due to weather, the Covington Lady Buccs seemed out of sync on Friday in a narrow 5-4 win over New Bremen.
New Bremen opened with a run in the first and another in the second for a 2-0 lead - a lead that stood through three and one-half innings.
That's because Covington struggled finding its offense, leaving runners stranded in its first three at bats.
But the Lady Buccs were finally able to get things rolling with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score.
Covington then scored two more in the fifth and another in the sixth to take a 5-2 lead with New Bremen coming to the plate in the top of the seventh.
Needing three outs for the win, Covington suddenly found itself in danger as Nee Bremen plated two runs of its won and had the tying run at second before shortstop Sarah Hubbard ended matters by hauling in a blooper at the edge of the grass for the final out of the game.
"It sure didn't seem like it, but we had eleven hits for the game," said Covington coach Dean Denlinger. "They were spread out."
The biggest hit of the game came in the bottom of the six as freshman Makenna Gostomsky executed a bunt perfectly for a base hit that scored what ended up being the winning run.
"That's a freshmen who came through for us," said Denlinger of Gostomsky.
It was a huge play as New Bremen, who connected for eight hits in the contest, nearly pulled off comeback win in the final inning.
"I challenged the girls after the game," said Denlinger. "I challenged them to do the little things better. Our effort and attitudes are where we need it to be. We just need to do the little things better."
Allison Babylon, Brooke Gostomsky, Justice Warner and Kara Schaffer each had two base hits apiece with Babylon, Gostomsky and Schaffer all connecting on doubles. Arianna Richards, Lexi Long and Makenna Gostomsky each recorded one hit apiece.
Covington improves to 4-1 on the season and hosts Indian Lake tomorrow in a double-header.
