APRIL 13, 2016 - COVINGTON
The reason the Covington softball program has continued to have successful seasons on an annual basis under coach Dean Denlinger is he stresses focus and execution on the finest details of the game.
This was never more evident than when Denlinger took a timeout to visit his defense after Covington recorded an out on a fly ball to right field in the sixth inning of a 9-0 Lady Bucc lead over Milton.
The reason, the back end of his defense never rotated over to cover the extra bases in case the routine fly ball happened to hit the ground.
"Each one of you should be focused on the second and third levels of backing up," Denlinger could be heard. "Don't lose focus on the things should be doing out of habit. You're too good for that."
Which is why Denlinger wasn't satisfied even after his team won 10-0 in a six-inning run rule against a very good Milton Union team.
"This was a good win against a good team, but we can play much better than that," said Denlinger. "Our bar is set higher than ever and I was hot due to the lack of focus. I can handle physical mistakes, but not mental mistakes. We're better than that."
Covington plated two runs in the bottom of the first, two in the third and broke the game open with four runs in the fourth.
Looking to end the contest with a run rule in the fifth, Covington left two runners stranded after scoring a run to make it 8-0.
But the Lady Buccs were able to seal the deal in the bottom of the sixth as Kara Schaffer connected on a walk-off single.
"We did some nice things offensively," Denlinger said. "We did some squeezing, bunting and hit the ball hard. But overall we did some things we need to improve on."
Brooke Gostomsky went the distance in the circle as she struck out six, walked none and allowed just four hits.
Gostomsky also helped out her cause at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Ashley Cecil went 2-for-3 with a triple, while Lexie Long went 2-for-3 with an RBI double and Kara Schaffer went 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Justice Warner had a two-run double, while Allison Babylon drove in e run on a double and Emma Dammeyer has an RBI single.
The win moves Covington to 9-1 on the season as it travels to Miami East tomorrow.
