MAY 4, 2016 - COVINGTON
The Covington Lady Buccs picked up conference wins on back-to-back nights, beating Franklin Monroe 7-5 on Tuesday and run ruling Bethel 12-2 on Wednesday to improve to 20-3 on the season.
In the win over Franklin Monroe on Tuesday, Brooke Gostomsky went the distance in the circle, while the defense played flawlessly behind her. The Lady Buccs also pounded out nine hits in the contest.
"We did a little bit of everything," said Covington coach Dean Denlinger of the game against Franklin Monroe. "We played very well defensively and executed some things offensively that put stress on their defense. Overall, it was a nice game by the girls."
Lexie Long and Kara Schaffer both went 3-for-4 on the day, while Ashley Cecil went 2-for-4 and Arianna Richards 1-for-4. Three of Covington's nine hits went for extra bases as Cecil tripled and both Long and Schaffer doubled.
"That's a good team we played and I felt the girls did a nice job of staying focused and keeping their composure," Denlinger said. "It got pretty intense at the end."
Things didn't look good for Covington early on as Franklin Monroe plated two runs in the bottom of the first for a 2-0 lead.
Covington responded with a run in the second, two in the third and another run in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead after three-and-one-half innings.
But Franklin Monroe tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and shut the Lady Buccs down in the top of the fifth.
Needed a stop of its own, the Lady Buccs came through to shut down Franklin Monroe in the fifth and then put the game away by scoring a run in the top of the six and two more in the top of the seventh.
Franklin Monroe did manage to plate a run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Lady Buccs held on for the win.
On Wednesday against Bethel, Covington recognized the two seniors Arianna Richards and Brooke Gostomsky on "Senior Night".
And the Lady Buccs jumped all over the Bees for a 10-0 lead through three innings.
Coach Denlinger then used the rest of the contest as an opportunity to try some new lineups as Covington cruised to a 12-2 win in five innings.
"When we got the ten-run lead we decided to put some of our kids into some stressful situations to see how they'd react," Denlinger said. "We used three pitchers, some different lineups in the field and tried some different things at the plate. We were also aggressive on the bases. The kids reacted well."
Brooke Gostomsky struck out three, walked none and didn't allow any hits in her two innings of work as she picked up the win.
Allison Babylon went two innings and gave up just one hit, while Kara Schaffer threw the final inning for the Lady Buccs.
The Lady Buccs travel to Greenville on Friday.
