MAY 7, 2013 - COVINGTON
It was shaping up to be a typical Covington - Newton thriller as the visiting Indians held a 1-0 lead with one out and no runners on for the Lady Buccs in the bottom of the third inning.

But the clouds opened up and thunder in the distance forced the two teams into the dugout for cover for a good forty-five minutes.

And after the delay, Covington erupted for four runs in the bottom of the third, five runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth for an 11-1 run-rule victory in five innings.

"We played solid defense again," said a pleased Covington coach Dean Denlinger. "We've always been a defensive oriented team and right now I think we are coming together."

After the delay, Heidi Cron stretched the count until finally reaching on a walk and Jessie Shilt followed with a base hit that put runners on the corners.

Cron then stole second and Heidi Snipes reached on an infield single that loaded the bases as both Shilt and Cron had to hold up at their respective bases.

Casey Yingst followed by squeezing in Cron to tie the score at 1-1, which lasted just three pitches as Connor Schaffer took a 2-0 pitch and drove a three-run home run over the left field fence for a 4-0 Lady Buccs lead.

Covington continued the onslaught in the bottom of the fourth as it put five more runs on the board, two coming on uncharacteristic passed balls by the Indians.

After shutting down Newton in order in the top of the fifth, Covington closed the show in the bottom half of the inning as Morgan Arbogast tripled to drive in Brittanie Flora and then scored on a passed ball.

Casey Yingst went the distance for Covington, surrendering four hits and just one walk. She also striking out one batter.

Covington tallied eight hits on the night and neither team was tagged with an error. The Lady Buccs also stole six bases in the contest.

Jessie Shilt went 2-2 with two stolen bases, Heidi Cron went 2-3 with a double, two stolen bases and three RBI and Morgan Arbogast went 2-3 with a triple and one stolen base.

Brittanie Flora reached on a single and Connor Schaffer had a three-run home run.

The victory pushes Covington's record to 22-0 overall and 10-0 in the Cross County Conference.

Next up is a long road trip to New Paris to face National Trail in CCC action tomorrow.
