|FRIDAY, APRIL 5, 2013 - NEW BREMEN
Good teams find a way to win in different ways and that's what the Covington Lady Buccs did Friday night in defeating New Bremen 5-0.
"Solid win," said Covington coach Dean Denlinger. "They're a solid team who will win a lot of games and we pretty much shut them down."
New Bremen only managed three hits on the afternoon thanks to the pitching of Casey Yingst and another error-free effort by the Lady Bucc defense.
"Casey was in pretty good control," Denlinger said. "She struck out 14 batters and gave up two walks against a solid team. We played good defensively behind her too."
Offensively, the Lady Buccs hit the ball hard all night, recording 10 hits in the contest. But Covington stranded 11 runners - three times leaving runners on second and third.
"We hit the ball hard, maybe harder than we have so far this year," Denlinger explained. "Unfortunately we hit a lot of them right at people. Still, I'm pretty happy with the way we hit the ball tonight. If a few of those get through, it's more than a 5-0 game."
Covington scored in the first inning on a sacrifice by Casey Yingst and didn't break through again until a run in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Morgan Arbogast.
The Lady Buccs followed with two runs in the fourth and another run in the fifth to put enough cushion on the scoreboard to made a potential New Bremen comeback virtually impossible considering how well Yingst was pitching.
Jessie Shilt went 2-3 with a triple, 2 RBI and 2 stolen bases, while Connor Schaffer went 2-3 as well with a triple and a double.
Heidi Snipes tripled as well for Covington, while Morgan Arbogast had an RBI double and Haley Adams connected on another double for the Lady Buccs.
Also recording hits for Covington were Heidi Cron and Jessica Dammeyer.
"We made a few mistakes, but overall we played pretty well," summarized Denlinger.
Covington improves to 5-0 on the young season and looks to keep the momentum rolling tomorrow in a double-header at home against Centerville.
